April 7, 2016

Every 7th of April the WHO celebrates the World Health Day in order to celebrate the foundation of the organization in 1948. This year the focus is to beat the diabetes. According to the World Health Organization in 2030 the diabetes will be the 7th cause of death in the world.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that affects several organs and tissues and is characterised by an increase in blood glucose levels. There are two different forms of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, being the last one the most common. On one hand, people with type 1 diabetes usually are diagnosed during the adolescence period and it results from the body’s inability to produce insulin. On the other hand, type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can produce insulin but not enough or not efficiently. Patients with diabetes type 2 are frequently overweight and are sedentary, two risk factor for developing this illnesses.

During the last decade sedentary lifestyle and overweight have increased creating an impact in the diabetes prevalence. Eating healthy, practicing exercise regularly and attending periodically to the doctor are some of the tips that appear in Galenicum’s Quick Health Guide, Galenicumvitae.

As a response of the future needs of the patients, Galenicum is developing 5 products for the diabetes treatment that will be launched in the coming years.
