Tourniquet for children,
an injection of courage
Courage detector: Getting an injection may be the scariest moment for young patients. Proper practice by the health professional is essential, and so is establishing a favourable scenario for minimizing tension and helping the child relax. Therefore, instead of using the usual tourniquet created for adults, which is a knotted thick rubber band that can inflict pain on small patients, a more adaptable model was developed that incorporates a child-friendly design.
The motivating slogan and concept of "Courage Detector" is aimed at turning the moment of maximum stress into a game so that children are distracted while they receive the injection. The scale printed on the band is easily visible to children and goes from a "-" sign with the image of a sad lion, to a "+" sign with a roaring brave lion next to it. Thus, while the healthcare professional is adjusting the tourniquet to the child’s arm, she sees the scale is increasing in courage until she herself is "brave as a lion.".
