World International Day against Breast Cancer

October 19, 2017

On 19 October every year, the International Day against Breast Cancer is held as a reminder about the commitment to the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among women worldwide, (with the exception of non-melanoma cancerous tumors of the skin.

In 2008, approximately 1,380,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed worldwide. It is currently the most common tumor in the female population in both developed and developing countries.

It is estimated that the lifetime risk of breast cancer is approximately 1 in 8 women.

Why is early diagnosis necessary?

The chances of curing breast cancer detected in the initial stage (in situ) is nearly 100%.

It has been shown that, thanks to the implementation of campaigns about early diagnosis, the mortality rate has decreased significantly, especially when it is detected among women over age 50, which is when most instances occur.
